Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is an ERP for small and mid-sized businesses: finance, purchasing, sales, inventory. If you want an AI assistant such as Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot to work with Business Central data, the first question is: is there an MCP server for it?
In short
Yes. Microsoft runs an official MCP server for Business Central online. It only reads by default; an admin enables writing on purpose. It does not apply to on-premises installations.
What Microsoft offers itself
The MCP server. According to Microsoft Learn, all MCP clients connect to https://mcp.businesscentral.dynamics.com. All actions run with the identity and rights of the signed-in user. The default configuration only discovers and reads. An admin with the “MCP - Admin” permission set enables create, modify and delete per API object.
A REST API. Business Central has a REST/OData API that signs in through Microsoft Entra ID.
AI in the product. According to Microsoft, Copilot in Business Central uses Azure OpenAI. Data may leave the environment’s geography for this if you allow it under “Allow data movement”. Microsoft does not use the data to train the foundation models.
What the community offers
According to its README, SShadowS/business-central-mcp speaks the protocol of the Business Central web client, not the API, and can also write fields. With the official server, most companies need no community server.
What this means for your company
- Stay with the default configuration, which only reads, at first.
- Enable write rights per API object, for example only for quotes, not for postings.
- An on-premises installation needs its own MCP server based on the API.
