What is Astro – and when is it worth it?

Astro is an open-source framework for content-driven websites. It generates pages as static HTML and only includes interactive components from React, Vue or Svelte where they are needed (islands). Since January 2026, the Astro team has been part of Cloudflare; Astro remains open source and still runs on any platform.

Astro is worth it for company websites, blogs, documentation and event sites where load time and discoverability matter. It is not worth it for applications with login, lots of state and interaction – Next.js is the better choice there.

Astro FAQ

When does dectria recommend Astro instead of Next.js?
For websites centered on content: company sites, blogs, documentation, event pages. For applications with login, dashboards and lots of interaction, we choose Next.js. We often combine both: Astro for the website, Next.js for the application behind it.
Can Astro display interactive content?
Yes. Individual components such as forms, filters or search can be interactive and built with React, Vue or Svelte, while the rest of the page stays static. Where needed, Astro also renders pages on the server.
Why do Astro websites load so fast?
Because Astro sends no JavaScript to the browser by default and delivers pages as finished HTML. Via a CDN, they come from the nearest data center. How fast a page ends up still depends on images, fonts and embedded third parties – we optimize those too.
What does the Cloudflare acquisition mean for Astro?
The Astro team has been part of Cloudflare since January 2026. According to both companies, Astro remains open source under the MIT license and still runs on any platform, such as Vercel, Netlify or your own servers. Nothing changes for existing projects.
