PostHog Development

Professional PostHog development from experienced developers based in Graz, Austria.

PostHog combines product analytics, web analytics, session replay, feature flags and A/B testing in one tool. We use PostHog in our own products: NetCero, an ESG platform in which dectria holds a stake, uses PostHog for product analytics. This website measures with PostHog too – cookieless without consent, in full with consent.

The most important decision before you start is hosting. PostHog Cloud EU stores data in Frankfurt and offers the full feature set. PostHog Inc. is a US company, however; data transfers are covered by the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and standard contractual clauses. Self-hosting is only available as a Docker Compose installation: PostHog officially does not support it, and it includes only the free-tier features – group analytics, data pipelines, SSO and audit logs are missing.

We help with this decision and implement it: event schema and data minimization, consent integration with a cookieless fallback, per-tenant analytics and, where it fits better, an alternative.

Use Cases

Typical Use Cases

Data-Driven Product Decisions

Which features are used, where do users drop off? Funnels and feature adoption – in SaaS products also per tenant via a tenant ID, without paid group analytics.

Privacy-Friendly Web Analytics

Without consent, PostHog counts visits cookieless via a server-side hash; with consent, it measures in full – as on this website. A filter removes URL parameters so that no personal data ends up in the analysis.

Controlled Releases

Roll out new features gradually with feature flags and measure them with A/B tests, with clear criteria before the full rollout.

FAQ

PostHog FAQ

Can PostHog be self-hosted?
Yes, with limits. PostHog only offers a Docker Compose installation, which it officially does not support and which, according to PostHog, hardly scales beyond a few hundred thousand events. It includes only the free features; group analytics, data pipelines, SSO and audit logs are cloud-only. For most companies, PostHog Cloud EU is the better choice. If data must never leave your own infrastructure, we check with you whether self-hosting or an alternative fits.
Is PostHog GDPR-compliant?
PostHog Cloud EU stores data in Frankfurt and offers a data processing agreement on every plan. Because PostHog Inc. is a US company, transfers rely on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and standard contractual clauses. Whether your use is compliant depends on the setup, though: consent, cookieless mode, disabled IP capture, data minimization and a deletion concept. It is best to align the legal assessment with your data protection advisor.
How do you analyze PostHog data per tenant?
Group analytics is a paid cloud feature. Without it, we send the tenant ID as an event property and analyze trends and funnels per tenant with breakdowns or SQL (HogQL). That covers usage and conversion per tenant; tenant-level feature flags, however, need group analytics.
What does a PostHog rollout cost?
PostHog itself is free up to 1 million events per month; above that, billing is usage-based. The effort depends on the setup: integrating it into an existing web app with an event schema and consent takes a few days, a production self-hosted operation with an operations concept takes several weeks. In a short conversation, we estimate the effort for your setup.
PostHog or Matomo?
PostHog fits when product analytics, feature flags and experiments should come together. Matomo is the classic choice for web analytics on your own infrastructure. We advise independently of the tool.
