Flutter App Development

One codebase for iOS and Android – from radio streaming in the car to the scanner app on the factory floor.

dectria builds apps for iOS and Android with Flutter – from one shared codebase, including publishing in the App Store and Google Play.

For Radio Soundportal, we built an app with live streaming, music channels and contests that also runs in the car via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. For Holzindustrie Kirnbauer, we built two scanner apps that transfer barcodes and photos directly to the company servers via SMB.

We take care of architecture, design, backend integration and ongoing operation with updates for new operating system versions.

What is Flutter – and when is it worth it?

Flutter is an open-source framework from Google for building iOS and Android apps from one codebase in the Dart language. Flutter draws the interface with its own rendering engine, Impeller, which is active by default on both platforms, so it looks the same everywhere.

Flutter is worth it for apps that should appear on both platforms, with their own design and without double development effort. It is less worth it when an app needs the newest platform features on day one, or when a web application would actually be enough.

Use Cases

Typical Use Cases

Apps for Customers & Members

Apps with accounts, notifications and content from your backend – built once, published on iOS and Android.

Media & Streaming

Apps with live streaming and CarPlay and Android Auto integration – like the Radio Soundportal app.

Apps for Industry & Logistics

Scanner apps that capture barcodes and photos and transfer them directly to company servers – as for Holzindustrie Kirnbauer.

FAQ

Flutter FAQ

Why does dectria recommend Flutter?
Because one codebase covers both platforms and the app looks the same everywhere thanks to its own rendering engine. Compared with two separate native apps, this saves a lot of development and maintenance effort. For apps that are very close to the platform, native development can still be the better choice.
Does dectria have experience with the App Store and Play Store?
Yes. We have published several Flutter apps in the App Store and Google Play and know the review processes, guidelines and typical rejection reasons. We automate certificates, builds and releases via CI/CD.
Can a Flutter app be connected to existing systems?
Yes, via REST or GraphQL APIs, Firebase or directly via protocols such as SMB. For Holzindustrie Kirnbauer, the scanner apps transfer barcodes and photos directly to the company servers via SMB.
Do Flutter apps work in CarPlay and Android Auto?
Yes. The Radio Soundportal app runs in Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Apple and Google prescribe fixed templates for this, for example for audio apps, and review them separately. We clarify which app categories are allowed in the car before the project starts.
