Cloudflare

Fast delivery, protection against attacks and logic close to the user – for websites that hold up during traffic peaks.

dectria hosts websites and web apps on Cloudflare and uses the network for DNS, certificates, protection against attacks and logic at the edge with Workers.

Our own website runs on Cloudflare, as does the audio guide for the Klanglicht festival of Bühnen Graz, which attracts more than 100,000 visitors every year. Peaks like these show the advantage: content comes from the nearest data center, and the origin server carries almost no load.

For new projects, we use Workers with static assets; we keep running existing Pages projects.

What is Cloudflare – and when is it worth it?

Cloudflare is a global network that delivers websites, protects them against attacks and runs code close to the user with Workers. It also offers DNS, certificates, storage such as R2 and databases such as D1.

Cloudflare is worth it for websites, content platforms and frontends that need to load fast and withstand traffic peaks. It is less worth it for applications with heavy server logic and a classic database behind them – a container platform or your own server often fits better there.

Use Cases

Typical Use Cases

Websites & Content Platforms

Statically generated websites with Astro or Next.js, delivered from the nearest data center – like dectria.com.

Event Websites with Traffic Peaks

Applications that stay stable during large events because content comes from the cache – like the Klanglicht audio guide.

Logic at the Edge

Workers for redirects, access protection, A/B tests and lean APIs that run without a server of your own.

FAQ

Cloudflare FAQ

When does dectria recommend Cloudflare?
For websites, content platforms and frontends that need to load fast and withstand traffic peaks. For new projects, we use Workers with static assets. If an application needs a lot of server logic and a classic database, we tend to choose a container platform or our own server.
Cloudflare or Vercel?
Both deliver websites fast worldwide. Vercel fits Next.js applications with a lot of server-side rendering best. Cloudflare is strong for static websites, protection against attacks and logic at the edge, and also works with Astro and other frameworks. We often combine both, for example Cloudflare for DNS and protection in front of a Vercel application.
What protection does Cloudflare offer on the free plan?
Protection against DDoS attacks, a free managed WAF ruleset and Bot Fight Mode, which challenges clearly automated traffic. Finer bot detection and more extensive WAF rules come with the paid plans. We also set up security headers, rate limiting and access rules.
How does Cloudflare relate to data protection?
Cloudflare is a US company and processes requests in its global network. We sign the data processing agreement and include Cloudflare in the privacy policy. If data demonstrably may only be processed in the EU, Cloudflare offers dedicated enterprise features for that, or we host with a European provider.
