Jira and Confluence by Atlassian are common tools for project and knowledge management. If you want an AI assistant such as Claude, ChatGPT or GitHub Copilot to work with Jira work items and Confluence pages, the first question is: is there an MCP server for it?

In short

Yes. Atlassian runs the Atlassian Rovo MCP Server for the cloud. For Server and Data Center there is no official server, but a community server that supports both variants.

What Atlassian offers itself

The MCP server. According to Atlassian, it runs at https://mcp.atlassian.com/v2/mcp. Sign-in uses OAuth 2.1 by default, optionally an API token. All actions respect the user’s existing permissions. According to the README, it needs an Atlassian Cloud site with Jira, Confluence, Jira Service Management, Bitbucket or Compass.

A REST API. Atlassian documents REST APIs for the cloud and separately for Data Center.

What the community offers

mcp-atlassian covers Jira and Confluence and, according to its README, supports both the cloud and Server and Data Center. For companies with Jira or Confluence in their own data centre, this is the obvious route. Zapier also offers Jira actions through its MCP server.

What this means for your company

  • Cloud: The official server is the right route. Decide which assistants may connect and whether they may create and change work items.
  • Data Center: Review the community server before you use it, or have your own MCP server run next to your installation.
  • Either way: what reaches the AI assistant falls under its terms.
