Notion is a tool for notes, wikis, projects and databases. If you want an AI assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT to work with the company knowledge in Notion, the first question is: is there an MCP server for it?
In short
Yes. Notion runs an official MCP server that still calls itself beta. It reads and writes. Only Enterprise customers control whether members may connect AI tools.
What Notion offers itself
The MCP server. According to Notion, it is hosted at https://mcp.notion.com/mcp and signs in with OAuth. Its own metadata calls it “Notion MCP (Beta)”. According to the Help Center, it connects AI tools such as Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor to the workspace. It reads and updates content the user can access. Only on the Enterprise plan do workspace owners control whether members may connect external AI apps.
The old open-source server. According to Notion, the open-source notion-mcp-server is no longer actively maintained. Notion recommends the hosted server.
A REST API. The Notion API uses tokens from internal connections or OAuth for public connections.
AI in the product and data location. According to Notion, customer data is not used to train models by default. Data is stored in the United States by default. On the Enterprise plan, it can be stored in Frankfurt, with backup in Ireland.
What the community offers
awkoy/notion-mcp-server signs in with a Notion token. According to its README, NOTION_READ_ONLY=true turns off all writes.
What this means for your company
- Without the Enterprise plan, every user can connect the server to their AI tool. At least put a written rule in place.
- The assistant sees everything the user sees. Review sharing in teamspaces first.
- What reaches the AI assistant falls under its terms, no longer under Notion’s.
