Personio from Munich is software for HR management, time off, payroll and recruiting. If you want an AI assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT to work with Personio data, the first question is: is there an MCP server for it?
In short
Yes. Personio offers an official MCP server, but according to Personio it is still in beta and not available for all customers. It is off by default, and write access is a separate approval.
What Personio offers itself
The MCP server. According to Personio, it connects AI tools such as Claude directly to the Personio account. An administrator enables it. Each user then adds the connector in their AI tool. The server reads for example profiles, time off, compensation and performance. Writing is off by default and limited to workflows Personio controls, such as time-off requests. Single tools can be switched on and off. According to Personio, ChatGPT needs a paid subscription.
AI in the product. According to Personio, AI processing runs on Personio’s own AWS servers in the EU, through AWS Bedrock. The data is stored in Frankfurt. Neither Personio nor third parties use it for training.
A REST API. The Personio API uses client credentials that you create under Marketplace > Connected integrations.
What the community offers
borgels/mcp-server-personio builds on the Personio API and, according to its README, has one profile for employees and one for HR. In the HR profile, write access is off by default. Zapier offers Personio actions through its MCP server, including writing ones.
What this means for your company
HR data is among the most sensitive data in a company. So:
- Switch tools for compensation and bank details on or off on purpose.
- Agree with the works council and data protection which AI tools may see HR data.
- What reaches the AI assistant falls under its terms, no longer under Personio’s.
