Slack is a tool for team communication in channels and direct messages. If you want an AI assistant to summarise discussions or write messages, the first question is: is there an MCP server for it?
In short
Yes. Slack runs an official MCP server that searches, reads and writes. Workspace admins approve every MCP client. Only Slack Marketplace apps and internal apps may use it.
What Slack offers itself
The MCP server. According to Slack, it runs at https://mcp.slack.com/mcp. Through it, apps search channels, read messages and threads, send messages and edit canvases and lists. Workspace admins approve and manage MCP clients. Only apps published in the Slack Marketplace and internal apps may use MCP, unlisted apps may not.
The Web API. The Web API is the interface for your own Slack apps. It uses OAuth tokens.
AI in the product. According to Slack, customer data such as messages and files is never used to train language models.
Data residency. According to Slack, data can be stored in Frankfurt, Paris, Stockholm or Zurich, among other regions. On the free version or the Pro plan, you need to upgrade to Business+ first.
What the community offers
According to its README, korotovsky/slack-mcp-server is widely used. Sending messages is off by default. The server can also run with browser session tokens, without an admin approving an app. For a company, that is exactly the risk.
What this means for your company
- Use the official server so that approval stays with your admins.
- Decide whether the assistant may only read or also write in your name.
- Private channels and direct messages are often more sensitive than expected. Agree with data protection and the works council what an AI assistant may see.
