Shopify is a platform for online stores, from small merchants to large brand stores. If you want an AI assistant to work with products, orders and customers, the first question is: is there an MCP server for it?
In short
Yes, several official MCP servers. One helps developers build, the others let AI agents search a store, fill carts and order. The developer docs describe no ready-made server for managing your own store.
What Shopify offers itself
Dev MCP. According to Shopify, this is a local server for developers. It gives AI coding tools access to docs and API schemas.
MCP servers for shopping agents. According to Shopify, agents search for products through Catalog MCP, either in one store or across all Shopify merchants. There are separate servers for cart and checkout. Shopify removed the catalog and cart tools of the older Storefront MCP and replaced them with these servers.
The Admin API. For products, orders and customers, there is the GraphQL Admin API. An app may only do what the merchant approved.
Data location. According to Shopify, it stores certain merchant and customer data in Europe, by default for new merchants. For processing, Shopify still transfers data internationally.
What the community offers
According to its README, shopmanagerai/shopify-mcp offers 122 read-only tools, among others for themes, products, content and settings.
What this means for your company
- A server that changes products, prices or orders should create drafts and publish nothing right away.
- Give an AI app only the rights it needs, for example reading orders without refunds.
- Customer data is personal data. What reaches the AI assistant falls under its terms.
