Asana describes itself as a work management platform with projects, tasks and AI teammates. If you want an AI assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT to work with this data, the first question is: is there an MCP server for it?

In short

Yes. Asana runs an official, centrally hosted MCP server (V2). It can change and delete data. We found no read-only mode. The earlier beta server V1 is deprecated. There is a second, separate server for Command by Asana.

What Asana offers itself

The V2 MCP server. In its documentation, Asana describes an MCP server through which AI assistants access the Asana Work Graph. It uses Streamable HTTP at https://mcp.asana.com/v2/mcp. According to the Asana forum, V2 has been generally available since February 4, 2026. A call without sign-in returns an error, so the server requires a token. The tool reference groups the tools into read, write and interactive tools. It also lists delete_task and delete_record. According to the tool reference, search_tasks is available on Premium accounts only; other accounts use get_tasks. According to Asana, the list changes continuously. tools/list in the client gives the current state.

Sign-in and rights. Asana uses OAuth with pre-registered clients. V2 no longer has dynamic client registration. Whoever operates a client creates an MCP app in the developer console and enters the client ID and secret. According to the tool reference, MCP apps use no permission scopes. The token requests access to all available tools. The assistant sees only what the signed-in user may see in Asana. A token applies to one workspace, which the user chooses at sign-in. Several workspaces need several sessions. According to Asana, MCP tokens do not work with the REST API.

Controlling access. According to Asana, customers on Enterprise+ or Legacy Enterprise can allow or block single V2 clients through app management. If a client is blocked, Asana asks for admin approval at sign-in. For the beta clients (V1), customers on other plans can request the block through support. Super admins must do this.

End of the beta server V1. Asana calls the beta server at https://mcp.asana.com/sse deprecated, since February 4, 2026 according to the forum. The integration guide gives August 5, 2026 as the shutdown date, extended from May 11, 2026. The forum names the same extension. The pages Using Asana’s MCP Server and Connecting Coding Clients still show the date 05/11/2026. August 5, 2026 is before our check date. We did not check whether V1 is switched off today. A call without sign-in returned HTTP 401 with a missing-token message there on November 7, 2026. That says nothing about whether signed-in clients still work.

Command MCP. According to Asana, Command by Asana is project management software for engineering teams. The Command MCP is a separate server at https://mcp.asana.com/v2/command/mcp. According to Asana, it works with Command teamspaces, tickets and releases, and can search, create and update tickets, write comments and read release status. According to Asana, each user needs a Command licence and access to the teamspace. For Claude, ChatGPT or Codex, the customer creates its own MCP app and enters its client ID and secret in the client. It is a different product from the Asana MCP for projects and tasks. The GitHub repository Asana/command-mcp is an earlier local server for Command tickets (stdio, MIT licence). According to its README it is deprecated. Asana points to the hosted Command MCP.

Claude and ChatGPT. Asana lists an app in Claude on asana.com and one in ChatGPT. According to the help articles (Claude, ChatGPT), both are available on the Personal, Starter, Advanced, Enterprise and Enterprise+ plans. For Claude with a team account, the app needs organisation-wide approval in Asana. That needs app management, which Starter does not include. According to Asana, use in teams can therefore be limited on Starter. The help articles name no restriction by region. We did not check whether Anthropic or OpenAI restrict the connector themselves.

A REST API. Asana offers a REST API. According to the authentication documentation, it uses personal access tokens or OAuth. The API is a different access path from the MCP server and needs its own credentials.

AI in the product. Asana bundles its AI under Agentic Work Management: AI Teammates, Asana Dash, AI Studio and AI Meetings. According to Asana, its AI partners do not train on customer data and must delete customer data after each query. According to the pricing page, a prepaid AI request costs 0.50 US dollars. The page defines an AI request as one successful unit of work by AI Teammates or Asana Dash. We found no statement on whether calls through the MCP server count as AI requests.

Data region. According to its help article, Asana runs a data centre in Frankfurt. It is available to Enterprise+ customers. In Enterprise, data residency can be bought as an add-on. The pricing page lists data residency under Enterprise+ and, in its feature table, as an add-on (opt-in). According to Asana, teams, projects, tasks, exports and attachments are then stored in Germany, with the backup in Ireland. Profile data such as email address and password stays in the US. According to Asana, processing outside the EU is possible, for example for support. The trust page names data residency with data centres in Europe, Australia and Japan. We found no statement on whether the MCP server uses the chosen region. The legal entity named in the terms of service is Asana, Inc.

What the community and platforms offer

roychri/mcp-server-asana is a free MCP server under the MIT licence. It runs locally and uses an Asana access token. The repository belongs to a personal account, not to Asana. The README lists more than 30 tools, including asana_delete_task and asana_delete_tag. With READ_ONLY_MODE=true it switches off all write access. The last commit is from April 23, 2026. Zapier and viaSocket also offer Asana actions through their own MCP servers. According to viaSocket, 30 actions are included, for example deleting a project. The pages do not prove which rights they use in Asana.

What this means for your company

  • The official server can change and delete data. We found no read-only mode. If you only want analysis, review the rights of the user who signs in.
  • The assistant acts with the rights of the signed-in user in one workspace.
  • According to Asana, single MCP clients can be allowed or blocked on Enterprise+ or Legacy Enterprise. Starter does not include app management.
  • If data must stay in the EU, you need data residency (Enterprise+ or an add-on in Enterprise). Ask Asana whether the MCP server uses this region.
  • Clients that still use the beta server V1 should move to V2.
  • What reaches the AI assistant falls under its terms, no longer under Asana’s.
