Status: November 2026. Checked against the vendor’s own sources, see Sources.

Linear describes itself as a tool for planning and building products, with issues, projects and cycles. If you want an AI assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT to work with this data, the first question is: is there an MCP server for it?

In short

Yes. Linear runs an official, centrally hosted MCP server. According to the pricing page, MCP access is part of all four plans. You can limit access to reading. We found no tool at Linear to delete issues.

What Linear offers itself

The MCP server. In its documentation, Linear describes a centrally hosted, authenticated remote server. It uses Streamable HTTP at https://mcp.linear.app/mcp. According to Linear, the older SSE endpoint is deprecated. According to Linear, the tools find, create and update objects such as issues, projects and comments. The changelog names single tools, for example list_customer_needs, list_teams and get_team. We found no complete tool list at Linear. We found no tool to delete issues. The changelog names removing issue relationships and removing projects from initiatives.

Sign-in and rights. Interactive sign-in uses OAuth 2.1 with dynamic client registration. The server also accepts a bearer token or a Linear API key. Linear offers two ways to read only: the /mcp/readonly endpoint, or the standard endpoint with only the OAuth scope read. According to the changelog, Enterprise workspaces with Okta SAML can manage access centrally through Okta when employees connect from a supported Anthropic agent.

Plans. The pricing page lists “MCP access” as included in the column of each of the four plans.

ChatGPT. Linear lists a ChatGPT connector in its directory for the “deep research” mode. According to Linear, it is available to Plus and Pro users, except in the EEA, Switzerland and the UK, and to Team, Enterprise and Edu users. The MCP documentation does not say that the MCP server itself runs in ChatGPT.

A GraphQL API. Linear’s public API is a GraphQL API at https://api.linear.app/graphql. It uses personal API keys or OAuth 2.0. According to Linear, it supports mutating all entities. The schema contains the mutation issueDelete. So deleting is possible through the API, although we cannot confirm it for the MCP server. API keys can be limited to reading, writing or single teams.

AI in the product. According to Linear, Linear Agent is available in every workspace by default. An admin can switch it off. It works with the user’s permissions, runs in chat, in comments, in Slack and in Microsoft Teams, and can create and update issues and projects. Linear bills coding sessions and Loops by usage, from prepaid AI credits, as an option. Triage Intelligence suggests team, project, assignee and labels. According to Linear, it does not train its own AI models on customer data, and its AI partners may not train on the data passed to them. The AI subprocessors are listed in the data processing agreement, which names Anthropic and OpenAI among others.

Data region. When you create a workspace, you choose between the United States and the EU, according to Linear. You cannot change the choice yourself. Most workspace data, including issue descriptions and attachments, is stored only in the chosen region. Workspace information, account and user data, API keys, usage data for analytics and crash data are always stored in the US. The email partner keeps notification emails in the US for seven days.

What the community offers

There are many community servers. jerhadf/linear-mcp-server is the most-starred pure Linear MCP server in our GitHub search. According to its README, it is deprecated and no longer maintained. The author points to the official server. Zapier and viaSocket also offer Linear actions through their own MCP servers, for example creating issues and comments. The pages do not prove which rights they use in Linear.

What this means for your company

  • The official server can change data. For analysis only, choose /mcp/readonly or the scope read.
  • The assistant acts with the rights of the signed-in user. Review teams and visibility in Linear.
  • If data must stay in the EU, choose the region when you create the workspace. You cannot switch an existing US workspace yourself. Some data stays in the US even with the EU choice.
  • What reaches the AI assistant falls under its terms, no longer under Linear’s.
