DocuWare (DocuWare GmbH, Germering) is software for document management and workflows. According to DocuWare, it has belonged to Ricoh since 2019 and operates as an independent subsidiary. If you want an AI assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT to work with documents from DocuWare, the first question is: is there an MCP server for it?

In short

We found no official MCP server from DocuWare. DocuWare does offer the Aura API. With it, external applications and AI agents can ask DocuWare Aura questions or retrieve documents. According to DocuWare, it exists in DocuWare Cloud only. On top of that there are third-party servers.

What DocuWare offers itself

DocuWare Aura. According to DocuWare, the AI assistant answers questions in natural language, summarises documents and compares them. It searches only the company’s own archives and respects access rights. According to the Knowledge Center, Aura needs DocuWare Cloud and the new web client. On-premises systems do not have Aura for now, and according to the press release an on-premises version of the new DocuWare follows later. Every Cloud organisation has a Freemium volume. In the configuration it is 5,000 indexed documents.

The Aura API. According to the Knowledge Center, it has a query interface, a retrieval interface (only the matching documents, another application produces the answer) and a general language model interface. The description is a Swagger page in your own Cloud. Sign-in uses a JWT from the DocuWare Identity Service. Calls use up Aura credits. The page names no MCP server. It describes importing the OpenAPI description into an agent platform.

The Platform REST API. According to DocuWare, the Platform Service is a standard part of DocuWare, for Cloud and on-premises. The developer documentation also names a .NET API.

What third parties offer

  • sniner/docuware-mcp is an open-source server (BSD-3-Clause). According to its README, it is an independent project with no affiliation to DocuWare GmbH. It offers six tools, all for reading (according to the source code): list and describe archives, search, read a document and its text, status. It runs over stdio or Streamable HTTP. According to the README, the HTTP endpoint does no authentication of its own. Credentials are a user name and password, or an OAuth2 client with an app registration (from DocuWare 7.10).
  • According to its README, Ksqsee/DocuwareMCP runs as a Cloudflare Worker and is added to Claude as a custom connector. Users sign in with their DocuWare login, read only. According to the README this needs a user name and password, not Microsoft SSO alone. The repository of a single author has existed since 8 October 2026. We did not test it.
  • EDV Consulting Zoichter GmbH, a service provider for DocuWare by its own account, offers an MCP connector that it runs as a service for Cloud customers. It is also open to DocuWare partners. According to Zoichter, it works with Claude, ChatGPT and other MCP-capable assistants, started read-only and since October 2026 shows workflow tasks and can change index fields and files in file cabinets released for it. The page names no terms or prices.
  • AnythingMCP offers a hosted DocuWare connector for Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot, with a 7-day trial. According to the vendor it has 7 tools, all read only. According to the vendor the platform can also be self-hosted, and its code is on GitHub under AGPL-3.0. The page does not say whether DocuWare knows or checks the connector.

None of these servers comes from DocuWare. The GitHub repository evallesv/dw_mcp holds only a README and a licence, no code.

Where the data is

According to DocuWare, DocuWare Cloud stores data in the EU or in the USA, depending on the data protection region (also in Japan and Australia/New Zealand according to the white paper), mirrored three times and also at a second location in the same region. Your contract says which region your organisation has. For Aura, DocuWare’s white paper says: for customers in the EMEA region, storage and processing are in the EU. Requests from EU customers run in the free allowance through Microsoft Azure AI Foundry (EU) and a VSE NET data centre in Germany. For customers in the Americas, storage is in the USA. According to its table, processing is first in the EU, in the USA if contractually agreed, and then in the USA. For customers in Japan and Australia, storage is in their own region, and processing is first in the EU and then in the USA according to its table. According to the white paper, requests from freemium customers outside the EU can also run through Azure AI Foundry (USA), and premium customers outside the EU can buy a package that fixes processing to Europe or the USA. According to the white paper, Aura does not store the content during processing and passes it to no third party. For on-premises systems, the location of your own data centre applies.

What this means for your company

  • Clarify with your DocuWare partner which region your Cloud is in and which Aura terms apply.
  • A third-party server works with one DocuWare account. Create an account with read rights on the file cabinets it needs.
  • The archive often holds invoices, contracts and personnel files. Check the permissions before an AI gets access. According to DocuWare, the new search and Aura search all places where a user has rights, even where access was so far managed through dialogs only. For questions without a document selection, Aura indexes only the file cabinets that the administrator chooses.
  • For third-party servers, check operator, licence and maintenance before you use them in your company.
